Orcas Island artist Marcia Spees is known for her exquisite watercolors depicting still lifes, florals, portraits, and island scenes.

After a dry spell in which she struggled with the frustration of feeling stuck and type-cast by her prior work, she has pushed the bounds of creative expression with a break-through exploration of representative and conceptual abstraction. This wild ride has also expanded her media repertoire to include acrylics, oils, pastels and inks.

Marcia’s September Orcas Center exhibit – “Driven to Abstraction” – marks the public debut of this new level in her artistic evolution. She is excited to share her fresh perspective of “seeing shapes not things” and exploring the fundamental harmonies beneath the obvious.

Marcia continues her decades-long studies with local artist and teacher Caroline Buchanan, and also works with nationally known artist Jeannie McGuire, and art teacher and coach Gwen Fox of Taos, New Mexico. Her original paintings and reproductions grace many Orcas Island homes as well as countless venues from coast to coast.
