The Orcas Island Jazz Festival (OIJF), Orcas Island’s premier jazz event, lights up Orcas Center for three days every Labor Day weekend. OIJF is dedicated to celebrating and sharing the music of jazz with the Orcas Island community and visitors, to introducing this quintessential American art form to new young audiences through education and performance, and to raising appreciation for the art of jazz in all audiences. As a program of Orcas Center under the artistic direction of Martin Lund, OIJF consistently showcases superb jazz. Each year at this Festival audiences enjoy some of the most highly regarded jazz artists working today.

Orcas Island Jazz Festival and Orcas Center present a free concert on the Village Green, Thursday, August 31st to open the festival of four fantastic days.

EntreMundos Big Band is an electrifying Seattle-based group that brings to the stage an uplifting and kinetic mix of deep Brazilian roots flavored with world rhythms––a deft blending of funk, jazz, and soul melding with the classic sounds of samba and bossa nova. EntreMundos means “between worlds” and the group’s mélange of seductive sounds embodies their name, stirring a personal and uncommon blend into a sound with universal appeal.

With the elegant and lilting vocals of Adriana Giordano, the superbly versatile Eric Verlinde on piano, and the locked-in rhythm section of Jeff Busch, Sam Esecson, Denny Stern on drums and percussion, Dean Schimdt on bass, and Freddy Gonzalez on trombone, EntreMundos Big Band delivers the goods: seductive, sparkling and substantial, light as a feather but with a deep, earthy groove, and guaranteed to move the hips and lift the soul!

EntreMundos is also bringing with them incredible dancers––US Samba Queen 2022 Deise Costa Crowley and US Samba Duke 2022 Léo Emanoel as featured performers to fire up the evening. The beauty of Brazilian music is that you can listen to it, or dance to it––it works both ways–– no passport required!
