Her work is inspired by the beauty and bounty of Orcas Island. Alexis offers one-of-a-kind floral arrangements\, hand-formed ceramics\, and colorful floral paintings\, prints and cards for sale through her garden studio\, Flower Moon Floral. \nArtist Statement: \n\n“I paint and make art to connect to and show my appreciation and curiosity of the natural world using color\, shape and meaning. My art is a dance between what is seen and unseen\, conscious and subconscious\, the past and the present\, and the relationship between our physical and spiritual experience. The ways in which memory\, history\, emotion and perception can inform the present moment continue to drive my desire to create. A painting can synthesize and mark this complexity in a unique and surprising way. And while I may control the start of a painting I am often surprised by the end result. Early in my career I was influenced by children\, untrained artists and differently abled  thinkers as these makers had an immediacy and rawness to their art making I found honest and limitless. Continuously inspired by the beauty and magic within our natural world I often find meaning and complexity in the simplest natural forms.” \n  \n

SUMMARY:Art Opening: David Densmore / Movement
DESCRIPTION:Visual Arts Committee Presents:\nFeatured Artist: David Densmore\n\nCommunity Show: Movement\n\nInstallation Day: Wednesday\, September 24th; 10:30am – 12pm\nArt Opening: Friday\, September 26th; 5:30pm – 7pm\nOn Display: September 26th – October 21st\nPickup: Wednesday\, October 22nd; 10:15am – 12pm \nOrcas Center’s Visual Arts Committee invites the community to participate in and attend the upcoming art exhibit\, Movement. This community show explores the idea of movement in all its forms—whether physical\, emotional\, spiritual\, or environmental. Movement can be captured in the graceful arc of a dancer\, the changing of the tides\, the shifting of seasons\, or even the stirring of the human heart. \nIsland artists of all backgrounds are encouraged to contribute their interpretation of this theme. From painting and photography to sculpture\, textiles\, and beyond\, each piece will reflect the many ways movement shapes our world and our lives. \nCommunity art shows at Orcas Center are open to all island artists—emerging or established. They are an opportunity to showcase local talent\, foster connection\, and celebrate the vibrant creativity of our neighbors. To participate\, artists should bring ready-to-display work to the Madrona Room on Wednesday\, September 24 between 10:30am and 12pm. \nOn Installation Day\, the artist will fill out two labels including title\, artist name\, the medium\, and the price\, (or denoted NFS). One label will be attached to the artwork\, the second will be given to the committee. The artist will also fill out an Artist Agreement and Sales Information Sheet if she or he does not already have one on file. All placement and hanging of the art will be done by the VAC. \nArtists are urged to attend and contribute hors d’oeuvres for the Artist Reception on Friday\, September 26th. \nTo learn more about exhibiting your art\, commission structures\, and upcoming shows\, please visit: www.OrcasCenter.org/VAC \n\nFeatured Artist: David Densmore\n\n \nOrcas Center’s Visual Arts Committee (VAC) invites you to the next Art Opening on Friday\, September 26 from 5:30–7:00pm\, featuring an Artist Talk with David Densmore at 6:00pm. This special evening will showcase Densmore’s work in the lobby gallery\, alongside the community exhibit “Movement” in the Madrona Room. \nDavid Densmore’s paintings celebrate the landscapes of Orcas Island and the people who have cherished them for generations. “I’m showing paintings of Orcas Island and environs that honor the soul and depth of these lands and the people who have loved them\,” he explains. “Something soft\, something calm\, something joyful\, something challenging\, something playful\, something odd\, something familiar\, something strange. Perhaps these paintings can live within you as you enter back into the landscape.” \nDavid’s creative journey spans decades and many mediums. After studying metalworking at the University of Wisconsin–Madison\, he designed jewelry in New York City before moving to Orcas Island nearly 40 years ago. Since then\, his artistry has taken many forms: from cardboard masks for the Halloween dance and parade costumes\, to jewelry at the Artworks\, carved rattles\, bowls\, and totemic sculptures. For the past 25 years\, he has turned his attention to painting the island’s landscapes\, capturing their spirit and vitality. In addition to his visual art\, David has written lyrics for many of Susan Osborn’s recordings and released his own album\, Brainstem Bouquet\, available on Bandcamp. More of his work can be found at www.ddensmore.com. \nJoin us on September 26 for an evening of refreshments\, community\, and a vibrant display of art from David Densmore and local islanders. The exhibit will remain on display through October 21.

I want to engage the viewer as a voyeur\, invite them to “come into the painting” and experience a very personal journey. My painting process is a bit of a journey as well. I never really know where I am going when I start and the hardest part is knowing when to stop. \nAlthough I was raised surrounded by my Dad’s very realistic paintings\, I was never interested in creating a representational image. I started studying with Terry Johnson about twenty years ago. I learned the formalities of composition\, color\, visual perspective\, edges\, values\, shapes and light with Terry\, but gradually my images became more and more abstract and the process became so much more fun. \n\nMary Jane Elgin \n\n \nA love of the Natural World and the experience of creating art to reflect it and resonate with it\, have guided me throughout my life as an artist. Clay is my vehicle for redefining the empty space in front of me\, for materializing a thought and bringing substance to a vision. The relationship of form\, the tension and interaction between the exterior and interior spaces of a piece intrigues me. I cut through my pieces allowing the spaces to bleed into each other\, revealing a fresh\, complex new balance. \nInitially I had guidance in ceramics from two wonderful teachers\, Ann Sears and Jim Heuston\, but through the past twenty years of my exploration into ceramics\, I have been largely self taught. These days I learn and take inspiration from my students\, particularly from those who have become accomplished ceramicists\, who constantly present me with new challenges while pursuing their own artistic paths and help me discover new was of making and looking. \nI start each piece by creating its basic form\, through hand building or throwing. After it has dried to a soft leather-hard\, I draw my design directly onto the clay. I then carve away the negative spaces and start the refining of the design\, paying attention to the inside as well as the outside of each piece. Then the piece is allowed to dry fully and bisque. Glaze is applied carefully with a combination of brush work and pouring. Finally the piece goes into a glaze firing in my electric kin or in our group wood fire kiln. \nSusan Singleton\nSingleton’s inspiration springs from the natural world with its intricate simplicity\, balance\, textures\, scale and light. Using handmade papers and paint\, she builds her artwork as layered architectural surfaces\, each piece a unique record marking time\, light and air. \nHer large-scale Ziggurats and other works of art have graced the lobbies and walls of some of the most beautiful hotels\, museums\, galleries\, and private residences around the world. \n“It’s good to leave each day behind\, like flowing water\, free of sadness. Yesterday is gone and its tale told. Today new seeds are growing.”   – Rumi \n\n

Gravitating toward found\, used\, and recycled materials\, she breathes new life into objects that others have discarded. For Zoe\, creative freedom often emerges from the constraints of using only what she can scavenge—whether it’s from the Exchange or a friend’s trash bin. She revels in taking things apart and discovering treasures inside\, which adds an element of chance and delight to the process. “Plus\,” Zoe says\, “Swinging a hammer is just thoroughly enjoyable.” \nBeyond her artistic practice\, Osenbach is a dedicated community organizer\, focused on giving fine artists opportunities for showcasing and selling their wares. She facilitates the Orcas Artists Studio Tour\, connecting artists and audiences through intimate glimpses into working studios – this year’s roster includes nearly 40 artists and takes place August 8 – 10. Additionally\, Zoe curates the annual Handmade Craft Market at Orcas Center each fall\, celebrating artisanal talent and handcrafted wares\, and is a dedicated volunteer of the Visual Arts Committee at Orcas Center\, which coordinates monthly art exhibits. \nThis summer’s exhibition offers a glimpse into Osenbach’s evolving body of work\, inviting viewers to discover the hidden stories and overlooked beauty beneath the plastic surfaces of everyday items\, and challenge the pervasiveness of our throwaway culture. \nJoin us for light refreshments and an opportunity to meet the artist as well as enjoy the community show\, “Botanicals and Blooms” in the Madrona room\, Friday\, June 27 starting at 5:30pm. This exhibit will be on display through July 22. \n\nwww.zoemakesart.com\nwww.instagram.com/zoemakesart \n \n  \n

We are just excited to appreciate the talent of Orcasonians from both the present and past. \nDuring intake\, in addition to the title and artist\, we will ask for a one-sentence description on how the piece is connected to Orcas. For example: \n \nBarbara Meyer (1918-2009)\nFirst Eastsound Airport Office (Built in 1947) \nBarbara was a beloved watercolorist who called Orcas her home for over 25 years. \nFrom the Collection of Bethany Marie\nNot for Sale \n  \n  \nPlease feel free to bring in your photographs\, artwork\, sculptures\, and more! Through Peter Fisher’s stunning photography\, the exhibition reflects the community’s journey to preserve this sacred site. \n“In 1984\, I began documenting Madrona Point when it was threatened by development\,” said Peter C. Fisher\, Orcas Island Historical Museum President. “This place\, the spiritual and geographic heart of Orcas Island\, carries profound meaning. Art became my way of honoring its story and helping others feel its sacred presence.” \nThe exhibition revisits a pivotal community moment\, when over 20 artists came together in 1986 in the first group show at Orcas Center to raise awareness and support the preservation of Madrona Point. The Madrona Point Committee was then formed\, and their collective efforts culminated in a historic land transfer to the Lummi Nation in 1990. \n“This show is about more than history\,” Fisher added. “It’s about the enduring power of place\, spirit\, and community. Art\, at its best\, can be a vessel for healing\, memory\, and transformation.” \nPeter Fisher will also be holding a free slide show and talk on June 7 at 2 PM on the Orcas Center main stage\, discussing how the Orcas and Lummi community joined together in the 1980’s to save Madrona Point\, and present further actions we can take to preserve this sacred land. Donations to the sponsors\, Orcas Center and the Historical Museum\, gladly accepted. More information can be found at https://orcascenter.org/event/a-call-to-action-the-preservation-of-madrona-point/. \nJoin us for the art opening reception on Friday\, May 23 at 5:30 PM with remarks by Peter C. Fisher\, Ron Myers on the piano\, light refreshments\, and a community show\, “Orcas Retrospectives” in the Madrona Room. \nwww.petercfisher.com \n\n \n

SUMMARY:On Display: Ponch Immel / Ceramics & Watercolors
DESCRIPTION:Visual Arts Committee Presents:\nFeatured Artist: Ponch Immel\n\nCommunity Show: Ceramics and Watercolors\n\nOn Display through November 19th\nPick up: Wednesday\, November 20th from 10:15am – 12pm \nFeatured Artist: Ponch Immel\nOrcas Center’s Visual Arts Committee (VAC) is pleased to present the next Art Opening\, Friday\, October 25 from 5:30pm – 7pm with featured artist\, Ponch Immel in the lobby\, and a community show of Ceramics and Watercolors in Madrona Room. \nWhile drawing and sculpting sand at the beach in Minnesota at just three years old\, Ponch Immel had a realization that creating art was what she was meant to do. She pursued an art-studies program but found that conventional art education stifled her creativity. Looking to books and museums for inspiration\, Ponch set out on a mission of artistic exploration – no medium would remain untouched – which has resulted in an immensely eclectic portfolio. \n“Creativity is a muscle that needs to be exercised\,” she says\, “When an idea strikes\, I don’t know exactly how it is going to come together. I just pick up a pencil\, or a block of wood\, or a paintbrush\, and just start – following where it takes me.” \nPonch’s body of work includes linocuts\, oil paintings\, wood carvings\, found items\, and more. She enjoys the process of creating\, feeling satisfied with a piece once only she’s able to explore a different path than before. “I create art for myself. And when I discover something new about a process or medium\, that’s invigorating. Art for me is a soulful practice – there are no mistakes\, just a different path to take – and everyone can be creative with something. It’s the process of doing that’s important.” \nCome to the opening exhibit featuring Ponch Immel\, and join us for refreshments and a community show of Ceramics and Watercolors by local islanders this Friday\, October 25 starting at 5:30pm. This show will be on display through November 19. He has exhibited in museums\, magazines\, and photography festivals in the US and overseas. Food Planet Future –\nUP CLOSE  borrows images from his traveling exhibition\, which explores Dash’s fascination with how the agricultural system impacts climate and biodiversity. He explains\, “Our food choices – what we eat\, how it’s grown\, and where we get it – hugely impacts the planet\, and we all have the ability to make changes to reduce or even reverse those impacts.” \nOver the past decade Dash has sought feedback and inspiration from portfolio review sessions sponsored by galleries\, museums\, publishers\, and collectors. Through that process\, Dash’s work has centered around a cohesive theme that can be sequenced to tell in-depth stories. \nDash’s recently-published book is titled Food Planet Future: The Art of Turning Food and Climate Perils Into Possibilities (Papadakis Publisher\, UK). Author David R. Montgomery wrote that Food Planet Future is “…an amazing visual feast with a terrific message!” \nThis exhibit will be on display through October 24. SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: Julia Summers / Abstracts
DESCRIPTION:Visual Arts Committee Presents:\nFeatured Artist: Julia Summers\n\nCommunity Show: Abstracts\nOn Display through September 24\nPick up: Wednesday\, September 25th from 10:15am – 12pm \nFeatured Artist: Julia Summers\n\n \nOrcas Center’s Visual Arts Committee (VAC) is excited to present the next Art Exhibit running August 23 – September 24 with featured artist\, Julia Summers in the lobby\, and a community show of Abstract Art in the Madrona Room. \nJulia Summers started her life as a photographer at the age of eight. She was bullied in school for wearing a patch and seeing with one eye. Her art teacher gave her an old Yashica camera inviting her to capture the world as she saw it. Julia loved exploring photography – it was something that she could do with one eye\, and excel at. \nThis gift has carried her for sixty-two years and a career as a documentary photographer. Julia’s photos have been seen in Ranger Rick and the International Wildlife Federation along with her contract work for National Geographic. \nAs the vision challenge progressed\, Julia began to create images of the world closer to home and began looking into the beauty of nature’s patterns – a world of intricate images that we normally would not see. Her fascination with the abstract designs a flower presents has been carrying her since and will display a series of images showing the Fibonacci Sequence – a sequence in which each number is the sum of the two preceding ones – as found in nature. \nStaying true to her passion\, Julia creates her art within the camera itself\, and takes pride in not altering her images\, noting\, “The most important thing I learned in school is that my images are either good or they’re not.” She prefers to spend her time exploring the world to find images\, not sitting in her studio editing software. “I find great joy when someone looks at one of my images and can feel the moment I was trying to capture.” \n\nTo learn more about exhibiting your art\, please visit: www.OrcasCenter.org/VAC

SUMMARY:On Display: Avi Shmueli / Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Visual Arts Committee Presents:\nFeatured Artist: Avi Shmueli\n\nCommunity Show: Landscapes\nOn Display through March 26th\nPick up: Wednesday\, March 27th from 10:15pm – 12pm \nFeatured Artist: Avi Shmueli\n \n\n \nAfter moving to Orcas with his wife\, Andrea Reback\, a few years ago\, Avi Shmueli set out to acclimate to his new natural environment. It was green\, remote\, very quiet\, and often dark and wet. He picked up painting to process the new scenery: The fir\, tsuga\, red alder and hawthorn trees\, the moss\, ferns\, bracken\, elderberry and ocean spray. Working mostly in abstract landscapes with oil on canvas\, his work consists of outdoor scenes from the areas he covers on walks with his dog\, Ranger. \nWhile hesitant to call himself an “artist”\, Avi has a distinctive style which he feels has congealed over the past few years through study and exploring different disciplines. Writing\, printing\, and drawing never ‘stuck’\, but when he started oil painting\, he felt his creativity and inspiration unfold. \nAvi’s process involves taking many photographs – some stand on their own\, but others\, based on light\, shade\, and composition\, are best suited to be translated on canvas. Avi credits his art class with Terry Johnson as giving him regular motivation to pursue his art: \n“It’s the little things with in-person instruction that you can’t get from online classes – Watching someone hold a brush\, looking at how they work\, and having the positive encouragement from artists of all skills and experience levels. They have helped me to mature and grow immensely as an artist.” \n\n\n  \n\nCommunity Show: Landscapes\nLandscapes are the dynamic backdrop to our lives. They help define the self-image of the people within a specific region and give a sense of place that differentiates one area from another. Join us for this fantastic community show that explores the world around us. \nJoin us for this community show\, where 48 artists contributed over 75 works of art\, which is on display through March 26th. Community shows are open to ALL island artists\, beginning and experienced alike. It’s purpose it to showcase island art and celebrate the creativity of our neighbors! \nTo learn more about exhibiting your art\, please visit: www.OrcasCenter.org/VAC \nThis exhibit will be on display at Orcas Center March 1st – March 26th – Come see what your talented neighbors have created!

SUMMARY:On Display Now: High School Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The San Juan Arts Council with The Visual Arts Committee Present:\nOrcas Island High School Art Exhibit\n\nOn display through December 17th \nA funny thing happened on the way to the ferry… \nYou may recall that Orcas Center was set to host the Inter-Island High School Art Show in collaboration with the San Juan County Arts Council. This traveling art show started on San Juan Island\, then went to Lopez\, and was finally set to come to Orcas Thanksgiving week. \nUnfortunately\, the Ferry Fairies did not cooperate\, and the inter-island ferry was canceled for several days…thwarting the traveling art show’s attempt to reach our shores. \nLuckily\, the Art Show Opening on November 24th was saved by the fantastic students of Corey Wiscomb at Orcas High School! They generously brought in a plethora of work to adorn our walls for the Art Opening and beyond. We are so grateful to them all\, and encourage you to come by and see their amazing creations! We also wanted to give a special thank you to Grace Zwilling\, who played the art opening reception! At 11 years old\, it was Grace’s first solo performance\, and she impressed us with her talent\, repertoire\, and poise. We can’t wait to invite her back! \nAnd as a final update – the Orcas selections for the Inter-Island High School Art Show have finally arrived\, and are hung at Orcas Center! Please come by to view these fantastic works of art by Kiyomi Farish\, Lucy Troxel\, Gracyn Chamberlin\, Sintia Cruz\, Sam Sutton\, Moose Kinsey\, and Thurmond Russell\, on display until December 17th.
