SUMMARY:On Screen: El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego (Met Opera)
DESCRIPTION:Orcas Center presents on the Center Stage Screen:\nMet Opera: El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego\n\nTuesday\, June 9th at 1pm\nRuntime: 168 Min.\nTiered Ticket Pricing: $50\, $35\, $20\, $10 (Student and Senior)\nSYNOPSIS \n \n\nEl Último Sueño de Frida y Diego\n(Gabriela Lena Frank / Libretto by Nilo Cruz) \nMore information about El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego is available from The Met\, here. \nAmerican composer Gabriela Lena Frank makes her Met debut with her first opera\, a magical-realist portrait of Mexico’s painterly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera\, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz. Fashioned as a reversal of the Orpheus and Euridice myth\, the story depicts Frida\, sung by leading mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard\, leaving the underworld on the Day of the Dead and reuniting with Diego\, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. The famously feuding pair briefly relive their tumultuous love\, embracing both the passion and the pain before bidding the land of the living a final farewell. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met premiere of Frank’s opera\, a “confident\, richly imagined score” (The New Yorker) that “bursts with color and fresh individuality” (Los Angeles Times). The vibrant new production\, taking enthusiastic inspiration from Frida and Diego’s paintings\, is directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker\, following her remarkable 2024 debut staging of Ainadamar. \n

SUMMARY:On Screen: Eugene Onegin (Met Opera)
DESCRIPTION:Orcas Center presents on the Center Stage Screen:\nMet Opera: Eugene Onegin\n\nTuesday\, May 12th at 1pm\nRuntime: 245 Min.\nTiered Ticket Pricing: $50\, $35\, $20\, $10 (Student and Senior)\nSYNOPSIS \n \n\nEugene Onegin\n(Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky) \nMore information about Eugene Onegin is available from The Met\, here. \nFollowing her acclaimed 2024 company debut in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly\, soprano Asmik Grigorian returns to the Met as Tatiana\, the lovestruck young heroine in this ardent operatic adaptation of Pushkin. Baritone Igor Golovatenko reprises his portrayal of the urbane Onegin\, who realizes his affection for her all too late. The Met’s evocative production\, directed by Tony Award–winner Deborah Warner\, “offers a beautifully detailed reading of … Tchaikovsky’s lyrical romance” (The Telegraph). \nPyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–93) enjoyed tremendous fame during his lifetime as a composer of symphonic music and ballets. His operas have achieved a steadily growing popularity outside of Russia. The libretto for Eugene Onegin was largely put together by the composer himself\, with help from his brother Modest (1850–1916) and others. The source of the libretto is the mock-epic verse novel of the same name by Alexander Pushkin (1799–1837)\, whose position in Russian literature can be compared only to that of Shakespeare in English. \n

Over the last decade alone\, she has crafted dozens of grassroots performances\, including one musical\, four records\, and a multitude of dance theater works. Her compositions and courses are supported by her advanced training in music\, dance\, theater\, and voice. Sherman also founded the co-led Orcas Dance Collective in 2021 and has taught performing arts on Orcas Island for the last five years. She leads with the belief that every person has a right to self expression and that all performing arts skills can be learned. \nSherman graduated with honors from Indiana University in 2019 with a degree in Interdisciplinary Performing Arts and Composition. Notable stage credits include Eurydice (Eurydice)\, Into The Woods (Cinderella)\, Still Now (Annie)\, A Feminine Ending (Amanda)\, The Arboretum: A New Musical (Three) HOUSE HOUSE HOUSE: A Play with Dance (Carrie) and Footloose! (Wendy Jo) \nJamey Moriarty is a longtime theater artist and performer who loves acting\, directing\, stream-of-consciousness improvisation\, dancing\, and having fun. He studied theater at Whitman College in Walla Walla\, Washington\, graduating in 2014 with a degree focused on acting and performance. \nJamey spent approximately four years working at the Orcas Center\, where he specialized in technical design work including lighting and stagecraft. He made his directorial debut at Orcas Center in 2024 with the magic comedy She Kills Monsters and followed it up the next year with a theatrical spoof of Harry Potter called Puffs. He also has an extensive background working with kids\, including time at YMCA Camp Orkila\, teaching theater classes at the Orcas Center\, and working at private schools in Seattle. \nThis will be Jamey’s fourth year teaching theater camp at Orcas Center. He is very excited for this summer’s production of James and The Giant Peach\, especially since he’s often been told the claymation version of James from the original movie is his doppelgänger. We’re gonna have a peach of a time! \nCameron Sherman began his foray into stagecraft from his secondary school drama classes\, high school sound crew and video production\, and a focus on set and lighting design\, construction and media arts in college\, and furthering his career by becoming an IATSE stagehand. He is an adamant supporter of education in the performing arts for youth\, specifically from the backstage perspective. With 30 years in the industry involved in every aspect of production\, including managing crews of large scale concerts at venues across the PNW\, working on school\, local community theater and national/touring productions in theaters throughout Washington State; a brief stint into acting and directing\, and even returning to his alma mater as the Theater Advisor\, he continues to find ways to further the creative and technical drive and prowess of himself and others looking to express themselves through stagecraft of all types. He welcomes technical challenges and seeks the best possible team solutions right up until the curtain opens. \nABOUT THE SHOW \nBased on one of Roald Dahl’s most poignantly quirky stories\, Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach JR. is a brand new take on this “masterpeach” of a tale. Featuring a wickedly tuneful score and a witty and charming book\, this adventurous musical about courage and self-discovery is destined to be a classic. The possibilities for creative costuming and puppetry abound\, and young actors will love playing the outlandish and larger-than-life human and animal characters! \nFeaturing music and lyrics by the Tony-nominated songwriters Justin Paul and Benj Pasek and book by Timothy Allen McDonald\, James and the Giant Peach JR. is based on the beloved book by Roald Dahl and tells the story of a young orphaned child who finds a loving family in a most peculiar way. Sent by his mean\, conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree\, James discovers a magic potion which results in the growing of a tremendous peach that rolls into the ocean\, and is occupied by some not-so-normal characters. From the center of the gigantic fruit\, James and the unlikely crew launch a journey of enormous proportions. Together they discover that while we are all born into a family\, we then go on to create a family of our own. \nPaul says\, “Behind its wit and whimsy\, James and the Giant Peach explores some sophisticated themes. How do we define our family? How do we start over after a big loss? We’ve always planned to make it available for performance by schools and educational theaters groups as soon as possible\, because – and we think Roald Dahl would agree – young people are capable of amazing things” \nMcDonald says\, “I was a dyslexic student who hated reading when my third grade teacher\, Mrs. Spencer\, introduced me to the wonderful world of Roald Dahl. His stories instilled in me a love of reading and I have never looked back. Through their production these students are celebrating the power of story-telling\, teamwork and imagination. We hope you’ll join us in applauding them.”

Created and performed by the very best of Orcas Island and Orcas Dance Collective\, and directed by Jake Perrine\, this tech-forward exploration will move your heart\, mind\, and body. \nThe human brain is evolutionarily wired to rapidly categorize people into “in-groups” (us) and “out-groups” (them) to promote survival\, often within 170 milliseconds. This automatic\, subconscious process involves the amygdala (fear/threat detection) and prefrontal cortex\, leading to in-group favoritism and potential hostility toward outsiders\, especially under social stress or cognitive load. And yet humans are genetically more than 99% the same. SUMMARY:On Screen: Tristan und Isolde (Met Opera)
DESCRIPTION:Orcas Center presents on the Center Stage Screen:\nMet Opera: Tristan und Isolde\n\nRESCHEDULED: Wednesday\, April 1st at 1pm\nRuntime: 312 Min.\nTiered Ticket Pricing: $50\, $35\, $20\, $10 (Student and Senior)\nSYNOPSIS \nTickets can be purchased at the door. \n\nTristan und Isolde\n(Richard Wagner) \nMore information about Tristan und Isolde is available from The Met\, here. \nAfter years of anticipation\, a truly unmissable event arrives as the electrifying Lise Davidsen tackles one of the ultimate roles for dramatic soprano: the Irish princess Isolde in Wagner’s transcendent meditation on love and death. Heroic tenor Michael Spyres stars opposite Davidsen as the love-drunk Tristan. The momentous occasion also marks the advent of a new\, Met-debut staging by Yuval Sharon—hailed by The New York Times as “the most visionary opera director of his generation” and the first American to direct an opera at the famed Wagner festival in Bayreuth—as well as Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s first time leading Tristan und Isolde at the Met. Mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova reprises her signature portrayal of Brangäne\, alongside bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny\, who sings Kurwenal after celebrated Met appearances in Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer and Ring cycle. Bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green makes an important role debut as King Marke. \nRichard Wagner (1813–83) was the controversial creator of music-drama masterpieces that stand at the center of today’s operatic repertory. An artistic revolutionary who reimagined every supposition about theater\, Wagner insisted that words and music were equals in his works. This approach led to the idea of the Gesamtkunstwerk\, or “total work of art\,” combining music\, poetry\, architecture\, painting\, and other disciplines\, a notion that has had an impact on creative fields far beyond opera.

SUMMARY:'SAMA: To Listen' film showing
DESCRIPTION:Orcas Center Presents on the Center Stage screen:\n‘SAMA: To Listen’ film showing\nSunday\, March 29\, 7 p.m.\nTicket Pricing: $40\, $30\, $20\, $10 (student and senior) \n\n‘SAMA: To Listen’ film showing\n“SAMA: To Listen” follows filmmaker Darek Mazzone\, composer Peter Culshaw and entrepreneur musician John Goodfellow as they journey through Turkey\, Morocco and Malaysia\, engaging with musicians\, instrument makers\, spiritual leaders\, and community elders rooted in Sufi traditions. \nThrough intimate conversations and immersive musical experiences\, the film explores how music functions as a guide toward emotional clarity\, humility\, and connection. A screening of the film\, followed by a Q&A with Mazzone\, will be on Sunday\, March 29\, at 7 p.m. at Orcas Center’s Center Stage. \n“This film grew out of a simple question: what happens when we slow down long enough to truly listen? Not just to music\, but to people\, to culture\, and to ourselves. Traveling through these communities reminded us that tradition is not something we move past\, but something we build from\,” Mazzone said. \nAs the three reflect on aging\, legacy\, and the passage of time\, the film gently turns inward\, asking what we carry forward and how we remain human in an era shaped by technology and constant acceleration. SAMA: To Listen offers a hopeful\, globally resonant meditation on listening as a way of life. \nRafe Pearlman is opening the event. Pearlman\, an Orcas resident\, started his singing career with the wolves\, ravens and sled dogs of the Alaskan wilderness. The wild nature of his exploratory singing has led to performances spanning the globe\, from India\, Hong Kong\, Israel and Germany\, to Italy\, France\, Spain\, Australia\, Thailand\, Mexico and all across the United States. \n
