SUMMARY:On Screen: Tristan und Isolde (Met Opera)
DESCRIPTION:Orcas Center presents on the Center Stage Screen:\nMet Opera: Tristan und Isolde\n\nRESCHEDULED: Wednesday\, April 1st at 1pm\nRuntime: 312 Min.\nTiered Ticket Pricing: $50\, $35\, $20\, $10 (Student and Senior)\nSYNOPSIS \nTickets can be purchased at the door. \n\nTristan und Isolde\n(Richard Wagner) \nMore information about Tristan und Isolde is available from The Met\, here. \nAfter years of anticipation\, a truly unmissable event arrives as the electrifying Lise Davidsen tackles one of the ultimate roles for dramatic soprano: the Irish princess Isolde in Wagner’s transcendent meditation on love and death. Heroic tenor Michael Spyres stars opposite Davidsen as the love-drunk Tristan. The momentous occasion also marks the advent of a new\, Met-debut staging by Yuval Sharon—hailed by The New York Times as “the most visionary opera director of his generation” and the first American to direct an opera at the famed Wagner festival in Bayreuth—as well as Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s first time leading Tristan und Isolde at the Met. Mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova reprises her signature portrayal of Brangäne\, alongside bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny\, who sings Kurwenal after celebrated Met appearances in Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer and Ring cycle. Bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green makes an important role debut as King Marke. \nRichard Wagner (1813–83) was the controversial creator of music-drama masterpieces that stand at the center of today’s operatic repertory. An artistic revolutionary who reimagined every supposition about theater\, Wagner insisted that words and music were equals in his works. This approach led to the idea of the Gesamtkunstwerk\, or “total work of art\,” combining music\, poetry\, architecture\, painting\, and other disciplines\, a notion that has had an impact on creative fields far beyond opera.

SUMMARY:'SAMA: To Listen' film showing
DESCRIPTION:Orcas Center Presents on the Center Stage screen:\n‘SAMA: To Listen’ film showing\nSunday\, March 29\, 7 p.m.\nTicket Pricing: $40\, $30\, $20\, $10 (student and senior) \n\n‘SAMA: To Listen’ film showing\n“SAMA: To Listen” follows filmmaker Darek Mazzone\, composer Peter Culshaw and entrepreneur musician John Goodfellow as they journey through Turkey\, Morocco and Malaysia\, engaging with musicians\, instrument makers\, spiritual leaders\, and community elders rooted in Sufi traditions. \nThrough intimate conversations and immersive musical experiences\, the film explores how music functions as a guide toward emotional clarity\, humility\, and connection. A screening of the film\, followed by a Q&A with Mazzone\, will be on Sunday\, March 29\, at 7 p.m. at Orcas Center’s Center Stage. \n“This film grew out of a simple question: what happens when we slow down long enough to truly listen? Not just to music\, but to people\, to culture\, and to ourselves. Traveling through these communities reminded us that tradition is not something we move past\, but something we build from\,” Mazzone said. \nAs the three reflect on aging\, legacy\, and the passage of time\, the film gently turns inward\, asking what we carry forward and how we remain human in an era shaped by technology and constant acceleration. SAMA: To Listen offers a hopeful\, globally resonant meditation on listening as a way of life. \nRafe Pearlman is opening the event. Pearlman\, an Orcas resident\, started his singing career with the wolves\, ravens and sled dogs of the Alaskan wilderness. The wild nature of his exploratory singing has led to performances spanning the globe\, from India\, Hong Kong\, Israel and Germany\, to Italy\, France\, Spain\, Australia\, Thailand\, Mexico and all across the United States. \n

SUMMARY:On Screen: Cinderella (Met Opera)
DESCRIPTION:Orcas Center presents on the Center Stage Screen:\nMet Opera: Cinderella (Encore Presentation)\n\nTuesday\, March 10th at 1pm\nRuntime: 104 Min.\nTiered Ticket Pricing: $50\, $35\, $20\, $10 (Student and Senior)\nSYNOPSIS \n \n\nCinderella\n(Jules Massenet) \nMore information about Cinderella is available from The Met\, here. \nThe Met’s abridged\, English-language version of Massenet’s enchanting fairy-tale opera returns to theaters! Previously recorded live\, this performance stars mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as the rags-to-riches title character alongside mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo as the lovestruck Prince Charming\, with Emmanuel Villaume on the podium. \nJules Massenet (1842–1912)\, a French composer wildly popular in his day\, was noted for his operas\, songs\, and oratorios. The libretto for the opera’s original French version\, Cendrillon\, was fashioned by Henri Cain (1857–1937)\, a dramatist known for providing libretti for operas\, including several by Massenet. The Cinderella story was written by the French author Charles Perrault (1628–1703)\, who\, beyond crafting a number of famous fairy tales\, was a noted academic of his time. Kelley Rourke\, who created the new English translation for this season’s presentation\, is a librettist\, translator\, and dramaturg whose work has also appeared at English National Opera\, Welsh National Opera\, Scottish Opera\, Washington National Opera\, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis\, and the Glimmerglass Festival\, among others. \n

The duo has been playing music together since their earliest years. \nIn July 2025\, Wolfchild released their first album in two years\, titled “The Years.” This album was a deeply personal project written in the wake of Gabriel and Elion’s father’s death. Prevalent themes include grief\, mortality\, love\, and reflections on the passing of time. It is a poignant piece of art\, rich in humanism. SUMMARY:OIFF: 2026 Classic Film Series
DESCRIPTION:Orcas Island Film Festival Presents:\nFilms on Film – The 2026 Classic Film Series\nJan. 11 – Feb. 6\nSundays (except the last week!) at 4:00pm\nFree admission \nThe Orcas Island Film Festival is thrilled to announce the 2026 edition of its beloved Classic Film Series\, this year themed “Films on Film”—a curated exploration of movies that turn the camera on themselves. From silent-era masterpieces to biting Hollywood satire\, surrealist introspection\, documentary treasure hunting\, and behind-the-scenes chaos\, this series\ncelebrates the art of filmmaking by showcasing films about the making of films. \nFor as long as cinema has existed\, filmmakers have been irresistibly drawn to examining their own craft. Audiences have always been fascinated by the worlds behind the lens—how stories are imagined\, shaped\, produced\, and sometimes barely survived. This year’s series invites viewers to step into that meta-cinematic world and experience how film history has reflected on its own evolution. \nHosted by longtime film scholar and storyteller Michael Edward Yeaman\, each screening includes a brief introductory overview and a post-film discussion\, offering deeper insight into the filmmaking process and the cultural moments that shaped these iconic works. \nThis program is free to the public\, generously underwritten by David Dotlich and Doug Elwood. Attendees are welcome to bring their own food and drinks. \n2026 Classic Film Series Lineup: ‘Films on Film’ \nSunday\, January 11 – The Cameraman (1929)\nWidely regarded as one of the greatest silent comedies ever made\, Buster Keaton stars as a hapless cameraman determined to break into the newsreel business. A warm\, witty\, and brilliantly choreographed look at filmmaking’s early days. \nSunday\, January 18 – The Player (1992)\nRobert Altman delivers a razor-sharp\, darkly comedic indictment of Hollywood itself. This star- studded classic skewers studio politics\, ego\, ambition\, and the absurdity of the movie machine. \nSunday\, January 25 – 81⁄2 (1963)\nFederico Fellini’s dreamlike masterpiece follows filmmaker Guido Anselmi (Marcello Mastroianni) through a surreal creative crisis. A cornerstone of world cinema and a dazzling meditation on the artistic mind. \nSunday\, February 1 – Dawson City: Frozen Time (2016)\nA mesmerizing documentary chronicling the discovery of hundreds of lost silent films buried for decades in the Yukon permafrost. A haunting portrait of cinema’s fragility and resilience. \nFriday\, February 6 @ 5:00pm – The Stunt Man (1980)\nPeter O’Toole commands the screen as a mercurial film director whose chaotic production blurs the lines between performance and reality. A thrilling\, eccentric gem about the madness of moviemaking.

SUMMARY:Community Band Concert
DESCRIPTION:Orcas Center Presents on Center Stage\nOrcas Island Community Band\n\nSaturday\, Dec 20th\, 7:00 PM\nAdmission by donation \nThe amount of musical talent on Orcas continues to astound – Join your island friends and neighbors for a smorgasbord of musical styles from performers of all ages! \nAbout Orcas Island Community Band:\nLearn More at www.orcascommunityband.org \nThe Orcas Island Community Band (OICB) is a 501c3 non profit all-volunteer organization comprised of approximately forty Orcas Island and occasionally neighboring-island men and women dedicated to making a unique musical and cultural contribution to our community. Membership in the OICB is open to musicians of high school age or older who play instruments found in the standard scoring of the concert band. Our members come from a broad variety of backgrounds\, including healthcare workers\, firefighters\, school teachers\, engineers\, politicians\, doctors\, housewives\, students\, and senior citizens. \nFounded in October 1990 in response to local musicians desire to play band music together\, OICB began as a “garage band”. Five or six musicians gathered in Marlin Brown’s garage in the Orcas Highlands/Eastsound for weekly music sessions. By 1994\, the group had grown to ten musicians and they performed occasionally in the Historical Society’s July parades and were jokingly called the Orcas Island Hysterical Society’s Sedentary Band. After participating center stage in one of the Orcas Center’s early variety shows membership grew exponentially.
