SUMMARY:An Evening of Off-Center Acts
DESCRIPTION:Orcas Center Presents in The Black Box\nAn Evening of Off-Center Acts\n\nSaturday\, January 11th starting at 7pm\n$5 Tickets at the Door\nAges 15+\nBar with ID \n\nThe Black Box Theatre is where we can showcase edgier\, experimental artists and forms\, and 2020 kicks off with an “Off-Center” music event featuring three live music acts and wrapping up with a DJ set. \nHeadlining the event is San Francisco singer / songwriter John Thompson. Combining inventive musical textures\, strong playing and a haunting\, evocative voice\, John’s music evokes the early works of David Bowie and Neil Young. \n \n  \nSupporting local acts include the incendiary song hammers of Ed Word (aka Matt Helms) the unbridled melodies and enthusiasm of Skeleton\, aka Pedro Lopez and Kellen Comrie. Skeleton is an apocalypso rhythm-led ride through soaring tunes reminiscent of a memento mori. Led by singer-songwriter Pedro LopezDeVictoria\, Skeleton explores mortality and the fragile world around us. After the sonic samplings of these three craftsmen\, we will push our chairs and cares aside and dance to a 2 x 4 DJ set by locals Luka Palisæde (aka Stephen Fairweather) and Jake Perrine.

Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin is on the podium for this important event\, with baritone Peter Mattei as the disturbed title character. Soprano Elza van den Heever is Wozzeck’s unfaithful mate\, alongside a commanding cast that also includes tenor Christopher Ventris\, bass-baritone Christian Van Horn\, and tenor Gerhard Siegel. \nWorld Premiere: Staatsoper\, Berlin\, 1925. One of the emblematic achievements of the thriving artistic forces in Germany and Austria during the brief period between world wars\, Wozzeck was a sensation and a scandal at its premiere. Remarkably\, it has lost none of its power to fascinate\, shock\, and engage audiences\, and its status as one of the defining musical works of the 20th century has not blunted its vitality.

Three of the NW’s finest troubadours\, Tom Rawson\, Ellen van der Hoeven\, and Carolyn Cruso\, are bringing a night of Triple Americana: songs\, stories\, harmonies and tunes inspired by the coffeehouse to Orcas Center. \nTom Rawson\, folk singer and storyteller from Orcas Island\, is the West Coast’s very own version of Pete Seeger. Armed with long neck banjo and other weapons of mass delight\, Tom is a master of warmth and wit who loves to share his musical treasures with an ‘I know something you don’t know and you’re gonna love it too’ kind of smile. \n“With his disarming manner and generous heart\, he fed us lyrics like he was cooking us supper. Since when do you go to a concert\, and the focus is on the audience\, not the ego of the performer?” S. Jaen Black of Orcas News and Review said. \nEllen van der Hoeven\, an expressive singer/songwriter from Vancouver BC\, rounds out the duo with sweet dynamicism. Her songs are influenced by her rich background in British\, Irish\, Canadian and American folk\, and include references to fairy tales\, family relationships\, and of course\, the universality of love. \n \nSolo artist Carolyn Cruso plays the beautiful and rare hammered dulcimer\, a stringed instrument of the zither family originating in the Appalachians. \n“She is an outstanding hammered dulcimer player who has gained local and national acclaim for her wonderful recordings and performances\,” authors of The Quarter Note in Seattle wrote.  As a talented multi-instrumentalist on the flute\, guitar or vocals\, Cruso’s adventurous dulcimer playing has been described by reviewers and fans alike as mesmerizing and lyrical. With various Celtic traditions\, jazz elements and the natural world as her influences she weaves a web of magic with her music and stories. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nThroughout the evening\, Susan Slapin’s artwork will be displayed in the background. Susan’s artwork is poetic in nature\, with an emphasis on both the world of intuitive color\, and relative abstractions of the natural world.  Susan received her Art degree from Marylhurst University in Oregon and works in a number of mediums\, including printmaking\, acrylic\, mixed media\, and pastels. She also enjoys teaching art\, and is represented locally by Waterfront gallery on Orcas island. James Robinson’s stylish production transports audiences to Catfish Row on the Charleston waterfront\, vibrant with the music\, dancing\, emotion\, and heartbreak of its inhabitants. “If you’re going to stage Gershwin’s opera\, this is how\,” raved the Guardian when the new production premiered in London in 2018. David Robertson conducts a dynamic cast\, featuring the sympathetic duo of Eric Owens and Angel Blue in the title roles and an all-star ensemble that includes Golda Schultz\, Latonia Moore\, Denyce Graves\, Frederick Ballentine\, Alfred Walker\, and Ryan Speedo Green. \nWorld Premiere: Alvin Theatre\, New York\, 1935. A supremely American operatic masterpiece and the most ambitious work by one of the nation’s greatest musical talents\, Porgy and Bess focuses on the joys and struggles of a black neighborhood in Charleston\, South Carolina\, in the early 20th century. The overall combination of music\, word\, and idea among a complex blend of Americana make this a unique and impressive work both within and beyond the operatic repertory.

Geoff Shilling will be the featured artist\, with his work displayed in the Lobby. Geoff’s hand-woven images are made on a Jacquard Loom.  He starts with a photos he has taken\, which he may manipulate and combine\, then maps these designs into woven structures.  His images include Northwest landscapes\, bridges\, birds and trees.  These weavings are mounted on wooden frames so can can be hung much like a painting. \n The Community Art Show is open to all Orcas Island Artists and this show particularly welcomes fiber artists. Delivery of work is scheduled for March 4th\, 10:30am-12:30pm. Pickup of work is scheduled for April 1st\, 10:30am-12:30pm. For more information about exhibiting your art visit the VAC page. \nCall for Community Fiber Artists:\nOrcas island has a wealth of artists who create with fiber in a variety of ways\, weaving\, knitting\, felting\, quilting\, sewing and others.  The Visual Arts Committee at Orcas Center is highlighting these beautiful creations through the month of March.  We are seeking pieces which are meant to be displayed as art\, and also those that are wearable. \nWe have received an enthusiastic response to this show\, many fiber artists have never had an opportunity to show their work at the Center.   We hope to hang as many pieces from as many artists as possible\, but depending on size\, space may be an issue. \nWe hope to have a few on-going demonstrations at the reception.  If you are interested in providing a demonstration or have any other questions\, please call Kathy Youngren\, 360.472.0824 or Janis Mattox\, 360.376.3778.

One of Broadway’s most classic and beloved tales\, 42nd Street comes to Orcas Center’s screen on Saturday\, March 7 in the largest-ever production of the breathtaking musical. \nThis eye-watering extravaganza is full of crowd-pleasing tap dances\, popular musical theatre standards (“Lullaby of Broadway”\, “We’re in the Money (the gold digger’s song)\, “42nd Street” and more)\, and show-stopping ensemble production numbers as it follows the story of aspiring chorus girl Peggy Sawyer who comes to the big city and soon lands her first job in the ensemble of a glitzy new Broadway show. Mayhem and mirth ensue when just before opening night the leading lady breaks her ankle. Will Peggy be able to step in and become a star? \nFilmed in 2018 at London’s Theatre Royal\, the production is directed by the original author of the show\, Mark Bramble and screens at Orcas Center courtesy of ByExperience and Broadway HD. For BroadwayHD founders Stewart F. Lane and Bonnie Comley\, Tony Award-winning producers and acclaimed filmmakers in their own right\, capturing this production of 42nd Street was not just a special experience\, but also showcases their mission to present the stage on screen in a whole new way. \n“42nd Street was a groundbreaking production that made Broadway accessible and appealing to the masses\, making it especially fitting for capture by BroadwayHD\, where our mission is to make live theater accessible and affordable to fans across the globe\,” said Lane. “With close detail paid to every element of this iconic show in filming and editing\, viewers will feel that they are sitting in the hottest seat in the house.”

Convicted and sent to death row\, Roxie and another “Merry Murderess” Velma Kelly\, vie for the spotlight and the headlines\, ultimately joining forces in search of the “American Dream”: fame\, fortune and acquittal. This sharp edged satire features a dazzling score that sparked immortal staging by Bob Fosse. \nChicago first opened on Broadway at the 46th Street Theatre in New York City on June 3\, 1975. It was directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse. The musical was subsequently revived on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City on November 14\, 1996. It was directed by Walter Bobbie. This production has subsequently transferred to Broadway’s Shubert Theatre and Ambassador Theatre\, where it is still running.

SUMMARY:Charlie Porter and Friends - LIVESTREAM
DESCRIPTION:Streaming LIVE from Orcas Center:\nCharlie Porter and Friends\nThursday\, August 20th\n7pm\nStreaming on our homepage: www.OrcasCenter.org\n(Just be sure to go to our homepage by 7pm – it will magically turn into the livestream!) \nAn event not be missed\, GRAMMY award winning trumpeter and composer Charlie Porter has assembled an exciting new group combining some of the best talent from New York City\, Seattle and Portland for this one-time special live stream event on Orcas Island featuring music from his first two albums\, as well as a sneak peak at several songs off of his upcoming release. \nGroup Bios:\n \nCharlie Porter (trumpet): \nHailed by DownBeat as “fluid\, expressive and magnificent” Internationally acclaimed and Grammy Award-winning trumpeter and composer Charlie Porter first cut his teeth on the New York jazz scene in the late ’90s\, while simultaneously studying classical trumpet performance at The Juilliard School under the tutelage of famed trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis. Though he has a strong penchant for improvised music\, Charlie has since delved into many projects from jazz and classical to Arabic\, Indian\, African\, Australian Aboriginal and Korean music\, seeking to find common ground among all “good music” and avoiding the pigeonholing of genre labels. \nThough he has recorded many albums as a side musician\, Porter has two recent albums as a leader that have been garnering high praise. He recently released his second album as a leader “Immigration Nation\,” recorded in New York City\, on the Origin Arts label in late November 2019. It has been hailed by Jazziz Magazine as a “joyful but tempered expression of optimism…poignantly voiced…nuanced performance\,” “Sublime…Joyous…Fascinating” by Jeff Krow of Audiophile Audition\, and as “A sterling merger of politics and music” by Chris Spector of Midwest Record. \nPreviously\, he released the debut eponymous album\, “Charlie Porter\,” in 2018\, which featured a who’s who of Portland jazz musicians\, including the legendary Mel Brown and Chuck Israels. It was hailed as “A testament to Porter’s prodigious talent and imaginative creativity” by All About Jazz and as “Technical wizardry” by DownBeat Magazine. \nCharlie has toured the world as a side-man and band-leader in jazz and also as a classical soloist and chamber musician\, performing and recording with many notable musicians and groups over the last twenty years ranging from jazz greats including Joe Zawinul\, Mike Longo\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Ira Sullivan\, Aaron Diehl\, Mike Holober\, Jimmy Greene\, Jay Thomas\, David Berger\, Charli Persip and Chuck Israels to classical artists such as Simone Dinnerstein\, Sarah Chang\, and Joyce DiDonato as well as world-music greats Goran Bregovic\, Marcel Khalife\, and Kim Duksoo\, among many others. He is also a founding member of the grammy-nominated electro-acoustic Absolute Ensemble\, directed by Kristjan Jarvi. Charlie’s recent collaboration on opera star Joyce DoDonato’s crossover album “Songplay” earned him a Grammy Award for 2019. \nPorter holds degrees from The Juilliard School and Manhattan School of music in jazz and classical performance. He was also a Fulbright Scholar at the Paris Conservatory. Before his college studies\, he attended the Palm Beach County School of the Arts. Among many awards to his credit\, Charlie was the first trumpeter to win 1st place in both the classical and jazz divisions of the National Trumpet Competition. As a composer\, he has been commissioned by Chamber Music America and the Doris Duke Foundation. \nNick Biello (sax): \nNick Biello is developing a reputation as an exciting and artful musician. He has shared the stage with world-class artists\, such as Slide Hampton\, Cedar Walton\, the Jimmy Heath Big Band\, Rich Perry\, Phil Markowitz\, Steve Davis\, and Orrin Evans\, among many others. \nNick has been recorded on hundreds of albums\, from his own original projects to his work as a sideman for other artists. His debut album\, “Vagabond Soul\,” released in 2017 on the  Truth Revolution Recording Collective\, features Phil Markowitz\, John Benitez\, Clarence Penn\, Paul Jones\, Andrew Renfroe\, and Vincent Lionti. \nIn demand as a composer and arranger\, Nicholas has written arrangements that have been performed by artists such as Stevie Wonder\, Dave Koz\, and Kelly Rowland. His work has been televised on networks such as ABC and ESPN\, and heard in venues in Las Vegas\, L.A.\, and New York City. He has worked with members of the famed Apollo Theater house band in music composition and production. \nMichael Glynn (bass): \nBorn in Seattle\, bassist Michael Glynn began performing professionally at the age of 16.  While living in the Pacific Northwest\, New Mexico\, and the Bay Area he has performed with such jazz luminaries as Eric Alexander\, Peter Bernstein\, Seamus Blake\, Conte Candoli\, Eddie Daniels\, Dave Grusin\, Louis Hayes\, Geoffrey Keezer\, Don Lanphere\, Mark Levine\, Harold Mabern\, Lewis Nash\, William Parker\, Aaron Parks\, Bud Shank\, Bobby Shew\, Gary Smulyan\, and Terell Stafford. In addition to his jazz work\, Michael has performed in a variety of other genres\, including classical concerts with the New Mexico Philharmonic\, the New Mexico Symphony\, Opera Southwest\, and Canticum Novum Santa Fe\, calypso with steel drum legend Ray Holman\, and Arab/European music with Iraqi-American oud virtuoso Rahim Al Ha. \nMarina Albero (pianist): \nPianist\, composer\, and educator Marina Albero is a captivating performer born in Barcelona and based in Seattle since 2015. Albero’s piano playing is an absolute celebration of life\, her spirited performances are intelligent\, uplifting\, and delightfully engrossing. \nAlbero deftly draws on a lifetime of music tradition\, from her native Barcelona in classical as well as flamenco\, to Cuba and Son Cubano\, to American jazz. Albero was the recipient of the Golden Ear Award as Emerging Artist of 2018 and she has been awarded as best instrumentalist and best record of 2019 (“A life soundtrack”). \nMax Holmberg (drums): \n“Max is a Seattle-based drummer\, percussionist\, and teacher. He’s had the opportunity to perform in seven different countries\, and is regularly featured as a guest artist at festivals and various institutions of education. He runs several community-oriented jazz happenings including the podcast Jazztalk Seattle and the weekly Angry Beaver jam session. Kaizen leads his viewers through a nuanced\, multidimensional dreamscape of gentle sunset ripples set aflame by the fading sun\, flowers blooming within nebulas\, jellyfish swimming through spinning star fields\, and ancient trees reaching for the heavens. \nAfter spending five years focusing on digital photography\, Everett launched his live video projectionist career in 2011 the resident VJ (Visual Jockey) at the Seattle monthly ecstatic dance event “DreamDance”\, where he continues to perform monthly with a variety of acoustic and electronic music soloists and ensembles. His artist name “Kaizen” means “continuous improvement”\, and he has indeed improved continuously through constant public performances with members of Yaima for four consecutive years as their live video projectionist and lighting designer. \n \nRafe Pearlman’s music is anchored by his dynamic vocal range.  Rafe’s voice has been described as strong\, soulful\, sexy\, spiritual and transcendent: study of contradictions and an explorative hybrid of vocal styles. Synthesizing cultures from around the world\, ethnic and urban\, he has been influenced by the sounds\, textures\, and experiences of a lifetime of travel\, from the Alaskan Bush to the Middle East.  His voice inspires emotion and moves the spirit.\n\nWith a Little Help from my Friends  (Live with the Earth Harp Collective)\n\n… \nAramaic Prayer (solo accepela)\n \n\nLove Reign on America’s Got Talent\n \n\nAcross the Universe with Jean Houston\n \n\nFILM REEL\n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Bad Dads LIVESTREAM
DESCRIPTION:Streaming LIVE from Orcas Center:\nBad Dads\n\nFriday\, September 11th at 7pm\nStreaming on our homepage: www.OrcasCenter.org \nBad Dads are a three-piece rock ’n’ roll band from Orcas Island by way of California and Texas. They play a spontaneous collision of punk\, blues\, folk and rock music. If you listen carefully on a quiet Orcas afternoon\, you may be able to hear their music emanating from a garage\, barn\, or other makeshift structure on the island. All three members sing and write songs\, so they pass their instruments around proudly.\n…\nTheir recently released self-titled debut album is a raucous collection of songs covering well worn Dad topics such as war\, ennui\, conformity\, and marital relations. Goes great with a six pack of tall boys.\n…\nWatch them at the Hops on the Rocks beer festival on Orcas Island: \n \n  \n  \n
