SUMMARY:Community Band Concert
DESCRIPTION:Orcas Center Presents on Center Stage\nOrcas Island Community Band\n\nFriday\, June 13th\, 7:00 PM\nAdmission by donation \nThe amount of musical talent on Orcas continues to astound – Join your island friends and neighbors for a smorgasbord of musical styles from performers of all ages! \nAbout the Orcas Island Community Band:\nLearn More at www.orcascommunityband.org \nThe Orcas Island Community Band (OICB) is a 501c3 non profit all-volunteer organization comprised of approximately forty Orcas Island and occasionally neighboring-island men and women dedicated to making a unique musical and cultural contribution to our community. Membership in the OICB is open to musicians of high school age or older who play instruments found in the standard scoring of the concert band. Our members come from a broad variety of backgrounds\, including healthcare workers\, firefighters\, school teachers\, engineers\, politicians\, doctors\, housewives\, students\, and senior citizens. \nFounded in October 1990 in response to local musicians desire to play band music together\, OICB began as a “garage band”. Five or six musicians gathered in Marlin Brown’s garage in the Orcas Highlands/Eastsound for weekly music sessions. By 1994\, the group had grown to ten musicians and they performed occasionally in the Historical Society’s July parades and were jokingly called the Orcas Island Hysterical Society’s Sedentary Band. After participating center stage in one of the Orcas Center’s early variety shows membership grew exponentially. \n

SUMMARY:On Screen: Salome (Met Opera)
DESCRIPTION:Orcas Center presents on the Center Stage Screen:\nMet Opera: Salome\n\nThursday\, June 12th at 7pm\nRuntime: 1 hours 40 minutes with intermission\nTiered Ticket Pricing: $65\, $35\, $20\, $12\n(All-in pricing: There is a $2 ticketing fee included in the posted price) \n \n**Orcas Center’s Tiered Ticket Pricing is based on the needs of your family. The variant in pricing is not based on seat location or dates of performances\, rather\, what you’re able to afford to help us to maintain our facilities and create quality programming. \nTier A is the true cost per patron of putting on show at the Orcas Center\, Tier B is our standard rate\, also subsidized by our generous donors\,\nTier C is a rate subsidized by our generous donors. ** \n\nSalome\n(Strauss) \nCLICK HERE for more information about Salome from The Met\n \nMusic Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts his first Met performances of Strauss’s white-hot one-act tragedy\, which receives its first new production at the company in 20 years. Claus Guth\, one of Europe’s leading opera directors\, gives the biblical story—already filtered through the beautiful and strange imagination of Oscar Wilde’s play—a psychologically perceptive\, Victorian-era setting rich in symbolism and subtle shades of darkness and light. Headlining the new staging is soprano Elza van den Heever as the abused and unhinged antiheroine\, who demands the head of Jochanaan\, sung by celebrated baritone Peter Mattei. Tenor Gerhard Siegel is Salome’s lecherous stepfather\, King Herod\, with mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung as his wife\, Herodias\, and tenor Piotr Buszewski as Narraboth. \nThe story of this incendiary and powerful opera is derived from a brief biblical account: A young princess of Judea dances for her stepfather Herod and chooses as her reward the head of the prophet John the Baptist. This subject captured the imaginations of generations of visual artists\, but its full possibilities were perhaps best realized in Oscar Wilde’s 1891 tragedy (which was banned from performance in several countries). Strauss’s score combines the grandeur of Wagner’s epics with the focus and emotional punch of the short Italian verismo operas.

SUMMARY:We Are Here
DESCRIPTION:On screen on Main Stage:\nWe Are Here: A Documentary about Paperhand Puppet Intervention\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday\, June 11th at 7pm\nPay-as-you-will. \n\n\n\n\n\nWe Are Here\n\nWe Are Here is a one-hour documentary by Marc Levy that investigates the intention and process of a community whose aim is to move us to action through moving art. In We Are Here\, we find out what makes a puppet come to life and we are challenged to reconsider our own place in the world. \nIn 1998 Paperhand Puppet Intervention’s directors Donovan Zimmerman and Jan Burger met and began a\ncollaboration of epic proportions. They combine their theatrical art with community building\, cultural stories\, and protest. They create incredible giant puppets\, masks\, shadow plays and spectacle performances for all ages. \nCreators of We Are Here Marc Levy and Marc Solomon have graciously allowed us to view it in a Pay-as-you-will format. Proceeds will benefit the filmmaker (who made this with no budget)\, and the Orcas Center. \nPlease join us and be inspired!

SUMMARY:On Screen: Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Met Opera)
DESCRIPTION:Orcas Center presents on the Center Stage Screen:\nMet Opera: Il Barbiere di Siviglia\n\nSunday\, June 8th at 5pm\nRuntime: 3 hours with intermission\nTiered Ticket Pricing: $65\, $35\, $20\, $12\n(All-in pricing: There is a $2 ticketing fee included in the posted price) \n \n**Orcas Center’s Tiered Ticket Pricing is based on the needs of your family. Mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina headlines a winning ensemble as the feisty heroine\, Rosina\, alongside high-flying tenor Jack Swanson\, in his Met debut\, as her secret beloved\, Count Almaviva. Baritone Andrey Zhilikhovsky stars as Figaro\, the titular barber of Seville\, with bass-baritone Peter Kálmán as Dr. Bartolo and bass Alexander Vinogradov as Don Basilio rounding out the principal cast. Giacomo Sagripanti conducts. \nRossini’s perfectly honed treasure survived a famously disastrous opening night (caused by factions and local politics more than any reaction to the work itself) to become what may be the world’s most popular comic opera. Its buoyant good humor and elegant melodies have delighted the diverse tastes of every generation for two centuries\, and several of the opera’s most recognizable tunes have entered the world’s musical unconscious\, most notably the introductory patter song of the swaggering Figaro\, the titular barber of Seville. \n \n

SUMMARY:A Call to Action: The Preservation of Madrona Point
DESCRIPTION:Peter Fisher Presents:\nA Call to Action: The Preservation of Madrona Point\nSaturday\, June 7; 2pm – 3:30pm\nNo admission charge\nDonations appreciated \nJoin Peter Fisher\, President of the Orcas Historical Museum\, for a presentation regarding the preservation of Madrona Point. \nFrom Peter: \n“In 1984\, Madrona Point on Orcas Island\, a peninsula that was once a burial site for the Lummi Nation\, was slated for development into a residential enclave. After reading the news\, I went with my camera to begin documenting this prominent and scenic place\, endowed with significant local history and fragile ecology\, before its impending demise. \nSometimes I experience a feeling of direct connection to the world by sensing an energy that flows freely between myself and the environment. My heart was wrenched with sadness at the idea of this special place being converted into a dense condo and housing project. At the same time I experienced strong feelings of empathy for this endangered\, natural landscape. \nWith my inner ear\, I heard the land speak\, “If I go\, you go; we all go. This sacred site is the Omphalos of Orcas\, the geographic and historic heart of the island.” The proposed development would harm our essential cultural connections to the past and desecrate the native and white burial grounds stolen from the cemetery association and sold to a private party in 1890 by Reverend Gray and his cohorts. \n“Orcas Island\, without Madrona Point being preserved\, will have lost its most valuable spiritual\, aesthetic\, cultural\, and natural feature.” \nTo create awareness and interest among islanders for the effort to buy Madrona Point\, we organized an exhibition at Orcas Center in 1986.  Over 20 local artists participated. I made a handmade book\, Madrona Point\, 1985. It featured Cibachrome prints\, cattail-leaf handmade paper\, letterpress-printed calligraphy\, and madrona-burl-veneer covers. My artistic goal was to create the visual equivalent of a walk around the point. A limited edition of seven books and one proof copy were made and sold for $2500 each between 1985 and 1990. Art in the service of spirit! \nIn 1989\, after years of building a region-wide coalition\, we negotiated a $2.2 million appropriation from the U.S. Congress to purchase Madrona Point for preservation. On February 17th\, 1990\, a historic gathering was held at the Oddfellows Hall on Madrona Point to celebrate the transfer of the deed to the Lummi Nation. \nThe experience of combining my artistic vision\, interest in building healthy community\, and love of nature\, to help preserve sacred land was gratifying. What explains why people care so deeply for special places? A lesson I learned is not to underestimate the potential for artistic expression—be it music\, theater\, painting—to touch people’s hearts and transform community.”

Their journey took a pivotal turn when Brandi Carlile discovered them busking at Pike’s Place Market in Seattle and invited them to perform at her sold-out show at Benaroya Hall\, alongside Mike McCready of Pearl Jam and the Seattle Symphony. \nSince that breakthrough moment\, the band has quickly made a name for them selves both in the Pacific Northwest and beyond\, earning a dedicated following with their innovative sound and vibrant energy. As their notoriety has grown\, they’ve been asked to play numerous festivals\, including IBMA Bluegrass Live!\, Ogden Music Festival\, and Salmonfest in Alaska. Most recently\, they were honored to be selected as showcasing artists at Your Roots Are Showing 2025\, Ireland’s premiere folk music conference\, and they will be performing at the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival in New York this summer as a part of their busy tour schedule. \nWhile their influences include artists such as Watchhouse\, The Punch Brothers\, and The Avett Brothers\, The Litch Brothers Duo have a sound all their own — one that’s bold and forward-thinking\, yet firmly grounded in traditional bluegrass. Each member brings their own distinct musical voice\, contributing to the band’s versatility and adaptability\, whether performing for large crowds or in intimate settings. \nBeyond their musical skill and innovation\, what truly stands out at a Litch Brothers show is their energy. These young musicians clearly love what they do\, and their infectious passion and enthusiasm make their performances a thrilling experience. If you’re not already a fan of bluegrass\, The Litch Brothers Duo just might win you over. \nTickets available at: https://orcasfest.simpletix.com/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEli West\n\nEli West is an American Roots musician from the Pacific Northwest. A multi-instrumental creator of sonic spaces\, Eli’s former training as a designer informs a sound that is lush and organic – neither manicured nor overgrown. Evergreen timbres weave among pitches\, rhythms and lyrics to become comfortable rooms into which listeners are invited. \nLauded by Tim O’Brien as a musician “making music the World needs\,” Eli’s reputation as a crafter of considered\, toneful environments has fostered collaborations with Bill Frisell\, Andrew Marlin\, John Reishchman\, Julie Fowlis\, and many other pillars of the growing Americana movement. \n\n\nTickets available at: https://orcasfest.simpletix.com/ \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCaleb Klauder and Reeb Willms\n\n\n\nDust off your boots and gather around for some true and original modern honky tonk music. An all-star cast of master musicians backs these two soul singers of country music\, Caleb Klauder and Reeb Willms. These two are known to roots music fans across the globe for their soulful harmonies\, driving dance tunes\, classic original songs\, and commitment to the raw truth of rural American music. They live in the San Juan Islands of Washington\, though until recently\, home was Portland\, OR. They are foundational to the exceptional old-time and country music scene in the Pacific NW with the Caleb Klauder Reeb Willms Country Band and their membership in the Foghorn Stringband\, of which Caleb was a founding member. Charismatic performers\, they bring their unique set of talents to the stage with an eye towards good times and an ear towards the deepest songs and tunes. \nCaleb Klauder and Reeb Willms both originally hail from Washington State: Caleb from the coastal islands\, and Reeb from the high desert plateau. The two have come together in music and are hailed as some of the most compelling musicians making country roots music in America today. When these two sing together\, their honest incantations leave us spell-bound and smiling. \nTheir repertoire is made up of original songs and tunes as well as gems from American roots repertoires\, and the music they make is Americana in the truest sense of the word. Music is clearly in their blood. Caleb and Reeb’s originals and interpretations of songs have been covered and recorded by many performers and their musical presence reaches into a diverse and loyal fanbase\, giving creedance to the impact that this duo has on their listeners. Pillars of the Northwest music scene\, they carry the torch of their music around the world\, and can be found touring as a duo\, as well as with the Foghorn Stringband\, and the Caleb Klauder Country Band. SUMMARY:On Screen: Le Nozze di Figaro (Met Opera)

** \n\nLe Nozze di Figaro\n(Mozart) \nCLICK HERE for more information about Le Nozze di Figaro from The Met\n \nConductor Joana Mallwitz makes her Met debut leading an extraordinary cast in Mozart’s comic masterpiece. Bass-baritone Michael Sumuel stars as the clever valet Figaro\, opposite soprano Olga Kulchynska as his betrothed\, the wily maid Susanna. Baritone Joshua Hopkins is the skirt-chasing Count\, with soprano Federica Lombardi as his anguished wife and mezzo-soprano Marianne Crebassa as the adolescent page Cherubino. \nA profoundly humane comedy\, Le Nozze di Figaro is a remarkable marriage of Mozart’s music at the height of his genius and one of the best librettos ever set. In adapting a play that caused a scandal with its revolutionary take on 18th-century society\, librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte focused less on the original topical references and more on the timeless issues embedded in the frothy drawing-room comedy.

Through Peter Fisher’s stunning photography\, the exhibition reflects the community’s journey to preserve this sacred site. \n“In 1984\, I began documenting Madrona Point when it was threatened by development\,” said Peter C. Fisher\, Orcas Island Historical Museum President. “This place\, the spiritual and geographic heart of Orcas Island\, carries profound meaning. Art became my way of honoring its story and helping others feel its sacred presence.” \nThe exhibition revisits a pivotal community moment\, when over 20 artists came together in 1986 in the first group show at Orcas Center to raise awareness and support the preservation of Madrona Point. The Madrona Point Committee was then formed\, and their collective efforts culminated in a historic land transfer to the Lummi Nation in 1990. \n“This show is about more than history\,” Fisher added. “It’s about the enduring power of place\, spirit\, and community. Art\, at its best\, can be a vessel for healing\, memory\, and transformation.” \nPeter Fisher will also be holding a free slide show and talk on June 7 at 2 PM on the Orcas Center main stage\, discussing how the Orcas and Lummi community joined together in the 1980’s to save Madrona Point\, and present further actions we can take to preserve this sacred land. Donations to the sponsors\, Orcas Center and the Historical Museum\, gladly accepted. More information can be found at https://orcascenter.org/event/a-call-to-action-the-preservation-of-madrona-point/. \nJoin us for the art opening reception on Friday\, May 23 at 5:30 PM with remarks by Peter C. Fisher\, Ron Myers on the piano\, light refreshments\, and a community show\, “Orcas Retrospectives” in the Madrona Room. \nwww.petercfisher.com \n\n \n

Tenor David Butt Philip is the political prisoner Florestan\, sharing the stage with bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny as the villainous Don Pizarro\, veteran bass René Pape as the jailer Rocco\, and soprano Ying Fang and tenor Magnus Dietrich\, in his company debut\, as the young Marzelline and Jaquino. Bass Stephen Milling sings the principled Don Fernando\, and Susanna Mälkki conducts the Met’s striking production\, which finds modern-day parallels in Beethoven’s stirring paean to freedom. \nFidelio’s unusual structure\, glorious score\, and life-affirming aura make it a unique experience. It has been called a hymn to freedom and human dignity. Formally a singspiel (with musical numbers separated by spoken dialogue)\, Fidelio had a long and complex gestation. Its uplifting spirit made it the obvious choice for several important productions marking the end of World War II\, including the reopening of the Vienna State Opera in 1955.

Known for the innovation of their arrangements\, their harmonies are bold and anything but predictable. \nWith a 20-year background studying polyphonic music around the world\, Lauren Breunig\, Jeremy Carter-Gordon\, Lynn Rowan\, and Will Rowan share a vibrant energy onstage with a blending of voices that can only come from decades of friendship alongside dedicated practice. The ensemble shifts effortlessly between drastically different styles of music\, drawing their audience along on a journey that spans continents and centuries\, illuminating and expanding on the profound power and variation of the human voice. \nBBC Traveling Folk describes Windborne as “subverting expectations and redefining the genre [of vocal music]… just absolutely phenomenal!” Audiences and critics lavish praise upon the singers not only for their technical mastery\, but for the passion\, engagement\, and connection with each other and the audience that imbues each performance with a rare power. \nBut there’s another\, crucial dimension to Windborne that guides and roots their artistry. They are adherents to folk music’s longtime alliance with social activism\, labor and civil rights\, and other movements that champion the oppressed\, the poor\, and the disenfranchised. Their songs burst with lyrics that\, while penned decades or centuries ago\, still ring true in modern times\, and Windborne’s dynamic harmonies breathe new life into these songs. \nFollow Windborne Online:\nhttps://www.windbornesingers.com/\nhttp://instagram.com/windbornesingers\nhttp://facebook.com/windbornesingers\nhttps://www.youtube.com/user/WindborneMusic \n\n\n
