VAC Art Opening Reception: Madonna Comix

Orcas Center 917 Mt. Baker Road, Eastsound, WA, United States

The images in Madonna Comix are based on poems in which the Madonna represents multiple experiences of being a woman. Curator and art historian, Prudence Roberts, writes, "When Dianne showed me her early versions of Madonna Comix last year, I was completely stunned by their beauty and intensity. I had never seen anything quite like them before. These images combine snippets of Little Lulu comics, lines from Celia Bland’s poems, and Dianne’s own negatives, freeform drawing and saturated washes of color. The prints are dark and irreverent, funny and sacred, and as full of mystery and miracle as the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus."

VAC Art Opening Reception: Salish Blanket Exhibit

Orcas Center 917 Mt. Baker Road, Eastsound, WA, United States

"Worn as ceremonial robes, Salish blankets are complex objects said to preexist in the supernatural realm and made manifest in the natural world through ancestral guidance. The blankets are protective garments that at times of great life changes—birth, marriage, death—offer emotional strength and mental focus. A blanket can help establish the owner’s standing in the community and demonstrate a weaver’s technical expertise and artistic vision. The object, the maker, the wearer, and the community are bound and transformed through the creation and use of the blanket." - From Salish Blankets: Robes of Protection and Transformation, Symbols of Wealth by Leslie H. Tepper, Janice George, Willard "Buddy" Joseph
