    Orcas Center Technical Director Jake Perrine will be offering a three FREE introductory classes on the amazing MacOS show-control program Qlab (figure53.com) which Orcas Center now uses.

    If you’ve ever wanted to learn about designing sound, video, or lighting for performance, this is a great introduction. Each class will stand alone - you can choose which ones you want to attend - but all the topics inter-relate, so come to all three for the deepest learning.

    Adult Acting Program

    Adults and young adults expand their capacity to embody other characters through more challenging material and exercises. Emphasis during these classes focuses on honesty, vulnerability, truthfulness, and empathy, and then put all this energy into a physical, playable action.

    Fall curriculum will consist of script analysis, character development, scene work, improvisation, body and voice techniques, and performance. We will focus on developing craft and technique from the Western “the inside out” perspective (Stanislavsky, Strausberg, etc.).

    Computer Audio Class with Jake Perrine

    Jake Perrine, Orcas Center's Artistic Director & Technical Director, will teach a Computer Audio class Tuesday evenings 6-8pm in January: 1/7, 14, 21, 28, at Orcas Center. This class is for anyone who wants to record audio with their computer, but will lean towards music recording topics and techniques. Having a laptop is helpful, but not essential. The cost is $40 for all four sessions. Orcas Center Members receive 10% off. For Students 18 and under, email Jake@OrcasCenter.org for complimentary enrollment.

    Youth Acting Program

    Youth (ages 10-15) interested in the performing arts need a gentle, personal on-ramp to meet them where they are. Emphasis during these classes focuses on a willingness to play, pretend, imagine, empathize, and dream, and then put all this energy into a physical, playable action. Curriculum will consist of theatre games, acting exercises, improvisation, basic acting and voice techniques, and beginning scene work. The classes will expand and culminate in a performance on Center Stage in April based on Shel Silverstein’s “Where the Sidewalk Ends”.

    This lighting course consists of a comprehensive discussion on the instruments we have, how they work, and what they do. We’ll also discuss the fundamentals of light and shadow, color and intensity, balance, changing focus and mood. We’ll cover how we use light to enhance the creative process, to tell a story expressing emotion, pace and intent. Cues, Plots, and Schedules are also covered along with the production process of working with directors in rehearsal and performance.

The workshop is open to the public, and designed for audio hobbyists who want to improve their understanding of how audio works, how to work with it, and improve their live audio chops for weddings, live events, live recording, etc. 

    Tuition is a WORK TRADE! Anyone present at 11am for the each workshop will learn for an hour, and then head down to the Village Green Stage at noon and put their learning into practice by helping set up for the weekly Summer Concert Series show for an hour (and / or promise to return at the end of the show and help break the gear down for an hour). You will learn as much by doing as you did in the workshop, and are welcome to ask questions throughout!
